Thematic Post – Response to a News Story — New Thematic Post – Main Publication

5 02 2010

Winter greetings to all! Last week’s thematic post asked you to respond to a news story. Although we received a good number of submissions, few were related to our theme. So the Luna Negra staff congealed and created a staff poem in response to Haiti. This poem, titled “This way is that way,” has lines from five contributing staff members and can be read by clicking here or visiting our Submission’s Page.

In case you weren’t aware, Luna Negra’s main publication is set to be released March 1st. With that in mind, we want to focus our bi-weekly prompts on content for the magazine. As a reminder, the issue will focus on “The Art Around You,” pertaining to any and all studio majors (Fashion, Fine Art, Architecture, and so forth) as well as anything artistic in the city of Kent. We want this publication to resonate an artful perspective on school, work, and life in general at Kent. If you have any questions on what we’re looking for, feel free to email us at our gmail account (listed below).

Your submission may be in the form of a poem, prose, short story, illustration, photo, or any other literary outlet you can think of and submit it to lunanegra113@gmail.com. Please submit to the email account online only and the red and yellow submission boxes located at the entrances of Satterfield Hall. The comment section of this website will be used as a way to comment on individual’s work when it is published.

The Luna Negra staff will then choose some of the submissions to be published on this wordpress site. The submission deadline is February 19 at midnight. The submissions chosen will be published on February 20 after 2 p.m. As mentioned above, any post to this thematic submission could be published in our main publication (March 1).

If you would like to comment on any poems, please do! Be advised that each comment will be monitored before being posted.

Thanks again for submitting and keep spreading the word of Luna Negra!

The Perks of Teaching Poetry

16 10 2009

Luna Negra Production Editor, Brianna Ries, as a part of Teaching Poetry in the Schools – a class offered in the English Department – had the opportunity to teach the prompt “Where I’m From” at MIller South Middle School for the Performing Arts in Akron, Ohio. During the process, Brianna was able to write on her experiences within the classroom. She summed up her feelings in the poem “you taught me”. Brianna also asked her students if they would like to submit some of their work on this prompt to Luna Negra Magazine. Shauna Oldaker, one of Brianna’s students, submitted “I’m From…” and student Isabella Maguire submitted “Where I’m From”. You can find all three poems listed on our Submissions Page.
